History & Goals:

The University Place Veterans Plaza organization, a registered 501(C3) non-profit organization, was formed in October of 2009 by the late City of University Place Councilwoman Jean Brooks and her husband Harvey Brooks. It was Jean's dream to create this lasting memorial and celebration plaza in honor of all military veterans from University Place. The board of directors is currently made up of a diverse group of community leaders, veteran organization members, and community volunteers with the committed goals to:

  • Maintain a permanent place within University Place to honor and celebrate the service and sacrifice of all veterans from University Place and surrounding communities, both living and deceased, and to also acknowledge the sacrifices of the families of these veterans.
  • Provide a prominent location within University Place to hold veteran related events and memorials such as on Memorial Day, Flag Day, and Veteran's Day.
  • Provide an opportunity for the residents of University Place, in addition to staff at the City of University Place's Parks and Recreation Department, to participate in the maintenance of a memorial plaza in honor of its military veterans.
